IGDA to Present Game Developers Choice Awards
(Spectrum Media, January 19)

The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) will hold this year's Game Developers Choice Awards (formerly known as the "Spotlight Awards") at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, California on March 23, 2001. The awards provide the opportunity for game developers to honor each other, highlight the people behind the scenes and recognize and celebrate the art form of games. Game developers and IGDA members are able to make nominations from January 10 to February 9 at the dedicated Game Developers Choice Awards site: www.igda.org/awards.

The Game Developers Choice Awards take a unique approach to honoring accomplishment in the industry. The awards focus on specific advances in the art form, as well as contributions made to the industry by the community, through the following categories:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award
  • The First Penguin Award (honoring risk-taking in the industry)
  • Rookie Studio Award
  • IGDA Award for Community Contribution
  • Original Game Character of the Year
  • Excellence in Audio
  • Excellence in Game Design
  • Excellence in Level Design
  • Excellence in Programming
  • Excellence in Visual Arts
  • Game of the Year

In addition, a number of "Game Spotlight" awards will be presented without respect to game genre or platform; these recognize games that demonstrate innovation and bring a fresh element to the game development craft. Developers choose to bestow a Game Spotlight Award on a product because they believe it contains outstanding creative or technical contributions to the field of electronic gaming.

Activision Announces Xbox Titles
